A letter to Maya, from Ms. Lee

What Ms. Lee said

“Maya reads every animal book she can find in our class library, and she just started writing her own book about sea turtles. She is the first to help anyone who is stuck in math. Working on slowing down to check her work.”

The letter that came back

Dear Maya,

I am so grateful for you and everything you bring to our classroom. You make Room 12 a kinder, smarter place just by being you.

You read every animal book you can find in our class library. The way you dive into learning about animals shows me how curious and passionate you are. And now you are writing your own book about sea turtles! That takes real creativity and dedication, and I cannot wait to see where it goes.

You are also the first to help anyone who is stuck in math. When someone needs support, you are right there, ready to explain and encourage. That kindness does not go unnoticed. You make your classmates feel like they can do hard things, and that is a gift.

I know slowing down to check your work can be tough when your brain is moving fast, but I believe in you. With a little more patience, your careful thinking will shine through even more.

Thank you for being such a bright spot in our class. I am lucky to be your teacher.

A letter to Eli, from Ms. Lee

What Ms. Lee said

The letter that came back

Dear Eli,

I am so thankful for you. You make Room 12 a kinder, more thoughtful place just by being in it.

Do you remember how quiet you were back in September? I noticed it, and I understood. Speaking up in a room full of people is hard. But last week, when you volunteered to read your poem to the whole class, I saw something incredible. You stood up there with a big smile on your face, and you shared your words with all of us. That took real courage, Eli, and I was so proud of you. The way you have opened up this year shows me how much you have grown.

There is something else I want you to know. Every time I see you cleaning up the science table without being asked, it reminds me what a thoughtful person you are. You notice what needs to be done, and you just do it. That kind of quiet kindness does not go unnoticed, and it makes a bigger difference than you might realize.

Thank you for being exactly who you are. I am grateful to have you in our class.

Ms. Lee

The certificate

Thank you for your courage, your kindness, and for being exactly who you are, Eli.

That game against Central is one I will never forget, and you are the reason why. When you stepped up to the line with the game on the line, I knew you were ready. You made both free throws, and we won.

What made that moment even better was knowing how you earned it. You worked on your free throws every single day after practice. That kind of dedication does not go unnoticed, and it showed when it mattered most.

Free throws under pressure are one of the hardest things in basketball, and you nailed them both. That takes focus, confidence and heart. You proved to yourself and to everyone watching that all that practice pays off.

I loved coaching you this season, Olivia. You showed up, you worked hard, and you came through in the biggest moment. I cannot wait to see what you do next season!

Ms. Brooks

A letter to Lily, from Ms. Lee

What Ms. Lee said

“Lily played Minuet in G at the recital, her first time ever performing. Her hands were shaking before she walked up, and she still played it all the way through and took a big bow. She has practiced her scales every day since summer.”

The letter that came back

Dear Lily,

You did something really brave at this recital. Walking up to that piano for your very first performance takes courage, and you did it. I know your hands were shaking before you went up there, but you sat down, you played your Minuet in G all the way through, and then you took that big bow. That is what a performer does, and I was so proud watching you.

Your daily scale practice since summer showed up in your playing. Every single day you have been at those keys, building your fingers and your ear, and it made a difference. That kind of steady work is what turns someone into a real musician.

You proved something important to yourself at this recital. You can stand up in front of people and play, even when it feels scary. That first performance is behind you now, and I cannot wait to see where your piano playing takes you next.

TutoringHalfway through the year

A letter to Jonah, from Ms. Lee

What Ms. Lee said

“Jonah used to guess at long words, and now he breaks them into chunks on his own. Last week he read a whole page of his chapter book out loud without stopping and grinned at the end. Next goal: reading with expression, like he is telling the story.”

The letter that came back

Dear Jonah,

I have loved watching you become a stronger reader this term. The way you tackle words now is completely different from where you started, and I am so proud of how far you have come.

Remember when long words used to trip you up? You would take a quick guess and hope for the best. Now you stop, break them into chunks, and figure them out on your own. That is real reading work, Jonah. You are using the tools we practiced, and it is paying off.

Last week you read a whole page of your chapter book out loud without stopping. A whole page! And when you finished, you grinned. I could tell you felt it too, how much smoother the reading is getting. Moments like that remind me why I love teaching.

Your next goal is to read with expression, like you are telling the story instead of just saying the words. I know you can do it. You have already shown me how much you can grow when you put your mind to something.

I cannot wait to see where your reading takes you in the rest of the term. Keep going, Jonah. You are doing amazing work.

Ms. Lee

The certificate

The Word-Chunk Champion Award

Congratulations on becoming such a strong, thoughtful reader this term. You used to guess at long words, but now you stop and break them into chunks all on your own. Last week you read a whole page of your chapter book out loud without stopping, and you grinned at the end. You have worked hard, and it shows in every page you read. Keep practicing reading with expression, like you are telling the story, and watch how much more fun reading becomes. I am so proud of the reader you are becoming, Jonah.

ClubEnd of the term

A letter to Hana, from Mr. Chen

What Mr. Chen said

“Hana wrote the code for the line follower and kept rewriting it until it worked. She presented to the judges.”

The letter that came back

Dear Hana,

You earned this award for something that takes real persistence: writing code that actually works.

That line follower was not easy. You wrote the code, tested it, found the problems, and rewrote it. Then you did it again. You kept going back until it worked the way you wanted it to. Watching you stick with it like that showed me you have what it takes to be a real programmer.

And then you presented to the judges! Standing in front of judges and explaining your work takes courage, and you did it. You showed them what you built and how it worked, and that is something to be proud of.

I am so glad you are part of Lakeside Robotics. Keep coding, keep testing, and keep believing in yourself.

Mr. Chen

The certificate

That takes real courage. You earned this award for sticking with it and seeing it through.
